A job offer often feels like the finish line. Still, it's worth a quick fact check: Does the total package really fit you â or just the title? With these questions, you can see early if tasks, pay, and conditions are right.
The 7 questions for checking a job offer
- What are the three most important goals of the role in the first 90 days?
- Who makes technical decisions, who makes disciplinary decisions â and how fast?
- How is performance measured (KPIs, quality, deadlines) and how often do you get feedback?
- How is the pay made up (base, extra pay, bonuses, allowances) â and for what exactly?
- What working hours really apply: core times, shift plan, on-call duty, travel requirement?
- What tools, machines, or systems do you use daily â and what training is planned for them?
- What development is realistic: further training, next role, chances of being taken on?
How to get answers without sounding "difficult"
Ask to make things clear:
- âSo I can deliver from day one: What are the priorities for the first few weeks?â
- âWhat does a typical day look like exactly?â
- âWhat promises should be in the contract to avoid misunderstandings later?â
If something is important (for example: shift model, home office, extra pay), it should be put in writing.
Take 24 hours to think â and ask questions. A good offer can handle that.
